Devon map iconThe Devonshire Association, now a registered charity, was founded in 1862. Its full title, The Devonshire Association for the Advancement of Science, Literature and the Arts, reflects the wide range of interests not only of its founders, but also of the present membership. The Association has been described as bridging the gap between the arts and the sciences, and between the professional and the amateur. As such, its aim is to present a view of all that relates to Devonshire.

Members with particular interests are catered for by various specialist sections: Botany; Buildings; Entomology; Geology; History; and Literature.

The Association is also divided into local Branches,
Exeter being one of these. The others are Axe Valley, Bideford, East Devon, Newton Abbot and District, Okehampton and District, Plymouth and District, Tavistock and District, Tiverton, and Torbay. Usually, members join the most convenient Branch but, as with the Sections, may join any or none.

The Exeter Branch of the Devonshire Association was founded in 1952, and now has some 340 members. Although its events are primarily educational, a social aspect is by no means neglected. Research is encouraged, and the Association offers grants to those in need of financial support when undertaking original research relevant to
Devonshire.

Much of the research carried out by members is published annually in the Association's Transactions. Its contents reflect the eclectic nature of the members' interests and their varied backgrounds. The Transactions has an international reputation as a repository of information on all aspects of
Devonshire. Full members receive a free copy.
